Before Class Starts

Always bow to the kamiza (front of the dojo) when entering or leaving the dojo. Always enter with the right foot and exit with the left.

Always remove your shoes before entering the dojo. Shoes are not allowed on the wood floor. Speak quietly and maintain an attitude appropriate for serious practice. Eating, drinking, chewing gum, and using cell phones are not permitted in the dojo.

It is everyone's responsibility to set up the kamiza and ensure that the dojo is clean, safe and tidy at all times.

Respect your class and your instructor by arriving on time. Come to class early enough to help set up the kamiza, change and warm up.

If you must be late, enter the class quietly and bow in.  Do not disrupt the class. If you arrive just as the opening bow is being performed, stand motionless at the entrance and wait until class begins.

If you ever need to leave early, let the instructor know ahead of time.  When the time comes, do not disrupt the class and bow on your way out.

Class Opening

All students should immediately line up in a straight evenly spaced line when Sensei begins class. Know your proper place in line and go to it without delay.

Always line up to the left of Senpai (seniors). Senpai is anyone who holds a higher rank and/or started training before you.

Stand calmly and quietly and wait for Sensei to call out “Rei” (bow).

During Class

Do not interrupt the class unless the instructor invites questions.

Always bow after receiving guidance or instruction from Sensei or Senpai.

Talking during class is impolite and interferes with the concentration of other students. When discussion is necessary, keep it brief and quiet.

It is very poor etiquette to question Sensei’s or Senpai ’s authority or technical knowledge, and especially so during a class. If you are confused about something, ask respectfully. Do not insist on your point of view.

Always move quickly in class when instructed to do something. Walk with your left hand on your sword, your right hand firmly at your side, and your feet in close contact with the floor. Do not stroll.

Ending Class

When Sensei claps twice stop any talking immediately. Stop all practice line up and prepare for formal closing.

Assume the same position as for the opening of practice. All students should know their place in line at all times.

It is every student's responsibility to put away the kamiza.

Outside the Dojo

Practice your kihon waza and kata consistently outside of class, even if it is just for a few minutes every day. This is the only way to improve your skill and physical conditioning.

Please remember to pay your dues on time. Do not forget your responsibilities to the dojo, our instructor and your fellow students.
